U.S. Marshals Service dropped the former NIAID director’s protection in September 2024.
After nearly two years of receiving a federal security detail, the U.S. Marshals Service ended Dr. Anthony Fauci’s security detail just before the end of the fiscal year, in September 2024. Media outlets have wrongly claimed that President Donald Trump ended this protection since being inaugurated last week.
Dr. Fauci, who headed the nation’s COVID-19 response, retired at the end of 2022 and was given security under a Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The U.S. Marshals Service stated at the time the detail was withdrawn, “The USMS does not disclose information regarding threats that involve protected persons. A signed memorandum of understanding and reimbursable agreement between the Department of Health and Human Services and USMS regarding the detail have concluded.“
When asked about the security detail being removed from Dr. Fauci, President Trump said, “I think when you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off, and you know, you can’t have them forever.“
“We took some off other people too,” the president added. “They can hire their own security too. … I can give them some good numbers of very good security people.”
Dr. Fauci reportedly hired his own private security months ago.
